On a windy day many kiteboarders and windsurfers show up from all five boroughs (Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island), as well as from New Jersey, Westchester and western Long Island. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Chart: Atlantic Coast #12350 “Jamaica Bay & Rockaway Inlet”
Rockaway Inlet is a strait connecting Jamaica Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. It separates Rockaway Peninsula in Queens from Manhattan Beach, Plumb Beach, and Barren Island (Floyd Bennett Field) in Brooklyn. The inlet is obstructed by a shifting sandbar. A jetty, marked near the outer end by a light, extends south from Rockaway Point. The entrance channel extends westward of the jetty and is marked by lighted and unlighted buoys. The channel has depths of about 15 feet or more at mid-channel. A shoal with depths of less than 1 foot and marked by breakers is west of the entrance channel.

A study conducted by New York City Audubon of the ecological changes at Plumb Beach: “There is an equally important lesson in ecology to be learned from Plumb Beach 25 years later, but no one in the Park Service is going to tell you about it. Along our shorelines, there is a relentless struggle between man-made structures including filled land, and tidal and littoral currents of the sea. That struggle gets headlines when powerful storms tear away parts of barrier islands and beaches destroying and threatening houses and roads…”
